The next morning when Lottie got up, she found Danny sitting on the back porch, drinking his coffee. His hair was a mess, and he had bags underneath his eyes.

“What’s up, brother?” Lottie asked, after she grabbed her own coffee and sat in the chair next to him.

The silence was almost deafening since the kids were still asleep. The cool morning breeze ruffled her hair and she closed her eyes, enjoying the scent of the morning flowers.

Finally, Danny spoke.

“I had a bad dream last night. I dreamed about Charlie. She was laying on her side of the bed, looking so sick. She asked me why I didn’t save her.”

“You couldn’t have saved her. She’d been poisoned. You didn’t know that she had been poisoned and neither did she. You aren’t psychic,” Lottie said.

“I should have known something was wrong,” Danny said, so quietly that it was almost a whisper. “She was sick. I should have taken her to the doctor when she first started throwing up. I had a weird feeling that it was more than just the flu.”

“Hindsight is twenty-twenty. She had an upset stomach and she was throwing up for a few days. She was the one who insisted that she was feeling well enough to go back to work after the third day,” Lottie said emphatically. “You took her to the doctor when her symptoms got really bad and she had the seizure.”

“I know everything that you're telling me is the truth. I still feel guilty that I didn’t do more to save my wife. It was my job as her husband to protect her,” he insisted.

“That’s all that your dream was about. Charlie would never accuse you of not saving her. Charlie would never blame you for her death. Your dream was just a manifestation of your guilt,” Lottie said.

“I know. You’re right. I guess that it is just going to take me a while to get over losing her, especially the way that I did. Someone murdered my wife. Some monster killed her for no reason. How could they do that to me? How could they do that to the kids?” he asked.

Lottie knelt beside her brother, holding him close to her as he sobbed on her shoulder.

“I miss Charlie. I miss her so much,” he cried.

“I know you do. I know you do,” she said, wishing for all the world that she had the magic words that could help ease his pain.

He cried for several more minutes before pulling away from her.

“Thank you. I needed that. I don’t think that I’ve had a good cry like that since I first found out that she was gone,” Danny said.

“I think that you’ve been in shock,” Lottie said.

“What is shock?” Tobias asked.

Danny and Lottie turned around quickly to see both kids standing there. Lottie wondered how much they had seen.

“Shock is when your body and mind shut down after something really terrible happens,” Lottie explained.

“Do you think that me and Rachel have been in shock, too?” Tobias asked.
